This project, Chinesetianity, draws from my family's unique cultural heritage to explore the intersection of religion and cultural fusion. Using print design, it captures the transformation and adaptation of Western religious motifs as they merge with and evolve within Chinese local culture.
I combined hand-drawing with digital techniques to develop a series of prints featuring diverse materials and textures, such as hand flocking and devoré effects. Using print design inspired by field research in rural China, I illustrate how Western Christianity has been localized and transformed within Chinese culture. By applying these prints to silhouettes from the 1980s—an era whenWestern influences began to flood into China following the opening-up reforms—I aim to subvert Edward Said’s concept of Orientalism. Instead of Western interpretations of the East, this project reclaims the narrative by examining how Western culture is reimagined and assimilated into an Eastern context, challenging the traditional power dynamics and one-sided cultural representations that Orientalism embodies.
