The Reveal of Hidden Marks

This project addresses the hidden physical and emotional traumas associated with female procreation, focusing on the cultural silence surrounding childbirth in my country. Growing up, I became aware of the many unspoken truths about childbirth—the anguish of the experience itself and the lingering effects afterward—that mothers and grandmothers often kept secret. This silence isn't just confined to families; it permeates society, especially in recent years, as discussions about the hardships of motherhood have become increasingly sensitive in light of China's declining birth rates and the promotion of procreation following the end of the one-child policy.

This interactive installation simulates the process of the womb nurturing life, using textured knitting to represent the physical injuries and marks that many women endure. By bringing these concealed experiences to light, the project challenges the stigma surrounding postpartum complications, where mothers are often made to feel ashamed of their transformed bodies and choose silence over vulnerability. Through this work, I aim to spark a dialogue about the need for greater societal understanding, support, and education for women facing the realities of motherhood.
