About

This project takes a deep dive into the world of emotions, with a special focus on the wild and wacky realm of humor. After thoroughly exploring the different types and expressions of comedy, I decided to bring the laughs to life through crochet —yes, crochet! From the exaggerated antics of slapstick humor to the bizarre twists of surreal humor, each stitch adds a playful punchline, turning yarn into a comedy show of textures and patterns.

Art of Humor

This was my final project for the first semester of my MFA inTextiles at Parsons. The theme was "Emotions," and my assigned emotion was "Humor"—definitely a tricky one to pin down. I dove into the different types of humor, from clever wordplay like puns and satire to physical comedy like slapstick, and even the bizarre and mind-bending world of surreal humor. After exploring how humor could be expressed through various techniques, I decided to bring it to life through crochet.

Yarn is a wonderfully whimsical medium; its soft, fluffy texture has a playful quality that’s almost made for laughs. Using this, I crafted two pieces that embody slapstick humor’s physicality and surreal humor’s quirky, dreamlike absurdity. These works stand alone yet are intertwined, much like a good punchline and a setup. What’s particularly intriguing is how the female body, when depicted beyond the male gaze and represented by a female artist, takes on a refreshingly unique and unexpected dimension.
