Quilting/ Digital Printing/ Embroidery/ Knitting
"The Room Doesn't Exist" is a project that explores liminal space and the fusion of Dreamcore aesthetics with childhood memories.Through a blend of knitting and quilting, it stitches together fragments of the past, forming a vague intention—a place lost in time and space, a nonexistent room. Each layer comprises digitally printed organza and intricate lace stitches, creating a delicate, multi-dimensional space.
This is my graduation project at Parsons, inspired by my exploration of 'Core' aesthetics that began at Tsinghua in 2021. Fascinated by “Dreamcore” and “Weirdcore,” I created the “Lucid Dream” series using digital prints and glitch art, followed by “Deja Vu,” which blurred the lines between dreams and reality with knitting and acrylic. By 2024, I further explored the psychological impact of these aesthetics.
I chose the bedroom as a central symbol, more deeply tied to dreams than liminal spaces like corridors. In this intimate setting, we naturally shed our sense of self, merging with our surroundings. In dreams, self-awareness dissolves, leaving us as passive observers. To evoke this dreamlike state, I combined quilted lace—often associated with intimate environments—with digital prints, creating layered, ethereal scenes. The quilted clouds add a surreal, floating quality. Drawing inspiration from the textile artist Do-Ho Suh and a psychological thriller film,The Cell, I used computer modeling to slice objects, compressing them into layered textiles to convey a sense of depth.
